Using the "shigoki" process to dye the whole cloth with a base color, this fabric features original fish motifs that are textile printed using dye. "Shigokizome" refers to a method that consists of applying a soft paste mixed with dye to the fabric using a spatula called the "shigokibera." Only the surface of the fabric is dyed, while the reverse side remains white.
This process can be utilized to apply dyes on both sides of the fabric using different colors and patterns. This dyeing technique is commonly used when dyeing the base colors of Edo Komon or Yuzen patterns. The fish design prints were produced based on designs hand-sketched by Nakamura.
