Zip fasteners were invented as a device in the late 19th century. They would eventually revolutionize the function and design of clothing and accessories. However, following its introduction it took years to get incorporated for practical usage which happened during the early 20th century when they were applied on flight jackets for the United States Armed Forces. Each manufacturer competed to develop and distribute their zip fasteners with a variety of mechanisms and designs to meet the massive demands of the military. It is said that in the 1940's a zip fastening system was completed that is almost identical to the current standard used today.

TALON, CROWN, and CONMAR were the three companies that could stand behind their superb quality and large market share from that time. The deadstock vintage zip fasteners from these manufacturers are special as each one has a unique appearance due to individual differences in the manufacturing of the metal componentry and different degrees of fading on the taping holding the zip which varies based on the conditions of where and how they were stored. As it is difficult to source these zip fasteners in large numbers, they are only utilized on a select few styles of products produced by visvim.
